University Health System’s AYA (Adolescent and Young Adult) Program’s goals include establishing a protected social space for AYAs at UHS, creating an AYA-dedicated staff, and providing mobile entertainment units or activity kits to support room-bound AYAs and those who are spread out across our clinical spaces. Hope Hits Harder’s involvement includes securing funding and providing furniture for the AYA lounge and suppling the mobile entertainment units and activity kits for this often-overlooked group. The mobile entertainment units and activity kits will provide a source of distraction, and respite for AYA patients room-bound and receiving treatment throughout University Hospital. The units and activity kits will be housed in the AYA Lounge and can be checked out to inpatient rooms, infusion centers, and other clinical areas where AYA patients are treated. Each unit and kit will be different to reflect the interests of varying ages and genders. Using information gathered from AYA focus groups and a survey circulated among the AYA patient population, it was identified what they would like to have access to during their stay at University Hospital, in addition to highly desirable items for the AYA dedicated lounge.
